With the 2026 Midterm Elections nearly a month away, Great Day Latte held its second Civics and Conversation event Thursday September 24, 2026.
Attendees received sample ballots while facilitator and community organizer Reggie Weaver explained political positions on the ballot.
The group reviewed statewide positions, including Alabama Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and U.S. Senator, and discussed each role’s responsibilities.
The meeting continued with a review of proposed Statewide Constitutional Amendments on the ballot:
- Amendment 1: Sets a vacancy procedure for the Lieutenant Governor’s office and permits an adjustment in pay by joint resolution.
- Amendment 2: Establishes a merger process for county school systems, requiring an impact study, publication of the study, and procedures for protesting mergers.
- Amendment 3: Mandates local school boards to adopt policies on reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and on student-initiated, student-led prayer.
- Amendment 4: Requires K-12 schools to play or sing the first stanza of the Star-Spangled Banner during school hours weekly.
Local amendments on the ballot include a proposed property tax exemption for taxpayers aged 65 and older who meet specific conditions, increasing the exemption limit to $50,000.
The ballot also features a Mobile County referendum authorizing $82 million for construction and improvement of roads, bridges, and water drainage facilities.
Weaver directed voters to AlabamaVotes.gov for information on voting status, polling locations, and candidates for State Senate, State Representative, and Board of Education.
Attendees were cautioned about VoteSafe.org, a nongovernmental website launched by Elon Musk, which is not an official state or county resource and may contain inaccurate or misleading information.
The voter registration deadline is October 19th. Absentee ballot applications are due October 27th by mail and October 29th in person. To register, visit AlabamaVotes.gov or your local Board of Registrars office. Submit absentee applications by mail or in person to the Absentee Election Manager’s office.
Hand-delivered absentee ballots are due by November 2nd at the Mobile County Absentee Election Manager’s Office. Mailed absentee ballots must arrive by noon on Election Day, November 3rd. Voters should check with their local county election office for any updates to drop-off locations or instructions.
