Candlelight Vigil in Honor of Chyna Emoni Hickman in Mobile

Date:

Her light lives on. Yesterday, the community of Mobile gathered in love and remembrance to celebrate the life of Chyna Emoni Hickman. A woman of ambition and a dedicated mother,  Chyna was known for her soft-spoken grace and bold spirit.

A memorial display set up on a lawn with framed photographs of Chyna Emoni Hickman, a large silver "C" letter, pink balloons, and community members gathered in the background.
Community members gather to honor Chyna Emoni Hickman at the vigil, remembering a life taken too soon.

As her mother, Chastity Bell, shared, “She was always strong-willed. She was smart, very smart.”

That strength and heart was the spark she brought to her family and her work, and this candlelight vigil served as our way of showing the impact she had on all who knew her.

When we honored Chyna, we were also making a point about the kind of city we want to be. The people of Mobile are tired of the violence taking our neighbors, and standing together last night, surrounded by the pink hues she loved, was our way of saying enough is enough.  We’re choosing to look out for each other, rejecting the cycle of gun violence to keep our streets safe and protect our future.

This was part of the same conversation we’ve been having through the  Project Wear Orange initiative. It’s all about staying aware and taking care of our own. By coming together at 6434 Airport Blvd, we kept Chyna’s memory alive and made sure we are doing our part to protect one another. That’s how we move forward.
