Women for Alabama hosted its Fireside Chat Thursday, August 6, 2026. They met to hear from Louise Jones, wife of gubernatorial candidate Doug Jones, and Kalisha Figures, wife of 2nd Congressional District candidate Shomari Figures, on concerns, cares and plans to support women voters in Alabama.
Jones opened the discussion with challenges she’s heard from women across the state, including juggling childcare, employment and caregiving, saying, “I think there are a lot of issues that prevent [women] from fully being involved in the economy.”
She proposed an increase in minimum wage, securing grants to assist single mothers with afterschool care and tax credits for taking care of the elderly as possible solutions to these issues.
Figures continued the conversation around women’s health and family planning, with Jones concluding that a lack of access is a major factor in concerns, saying, “I think the situation is dire, particularly for just a lack of physicians.
“No one wants to come to Alabama. Can you imagine trying to practice in this climate, where physicians are being scared–frightened?”
She went on to speak about a growing concern amongst older Alabamians that their children and grandchildren won’t come back to live in Alabama, saying that this speaks poorly, to the state.
Jones says that Doug’s campaign and this election “is offering people in this state a very, very clear contrast,” saying, “We have a duty and a responsibility…as ‘Mom’ and an Alabamian…to turn that around.”
With less than 90 days until the November 3rd general election, she encouraged attendees to volunteer, continue community conversations, donate and to organize alongside the campaign through The Change Network app.
Former U.S. Senator Doug Jones (D) will face off against sitting U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R), and write-in candidate Ronald Burnette, Jr. (I) for governor November 3, 2026.
