The City of Mobile officially recognized a major cultural milestone this week, honoring a homegrown initiative that has spent the last half-decade empowering the next generation of young Black leaders. Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis signed a mayoral proclamation to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Miss Juneteenth America Scholarship Pageantry Program.
The Maynard 4 Foundation launched the national program right here in Mobile to serve young women ages 13 to 18. Far from a traditional beauty pageant, the initiative grounds its work in education, leadership training, and cultural awareness under the banner: “More Than A Pageant. A Living Chapter of American History.”
“The success of this initiative reflects the dedication of families, mentors, volunteers, sponsors, and community partners committed to empowering the next generation of leaders.”
Since its inception on June 19, 2020, the program’s nationwide impact has grown rapidly. Over the past five years, the Miss Juneteenth America Program has awarded more than $37,000 in scholarships and supported 57 young women across the United States . The program maintains an intentional focus on higher education, building robust networks of mentorship and direct partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and their alumni associations.
The program enhances its leadership curriculum through charitable giving, civic responsibility, and community engagement. Each year, participants join an annual educational pilgrimage to Galveston, Texas, the historic birthplace of Juneteenth. There, they learn firsthand about the profound significance of June 19, 1865, and the ongoing pursuit of freedom and equality. Program representatives noted that the mayoral recognition honors the hard work of the participants, alumni, and families representing states like Alabama, California, Georgia, and Texas, who continue to uplift their local communities.
Mayor Cheriogotis signed the formal proclamation at the City of Mobile on June 23, 2026, officially designating June 16, 2026, to honor the milestone.

The signing cements the Miss Juneteenth America Program as an important part of Mobile’s modern civic pride.
