The brand-new John E. King Senior Center is officially opening its doors with a ribbon-cutting ceremony this Thursday, August 27, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at 6024 Lorma Rd. The new center brings a dedicated senior services and community spaces right back to the neighborhood.
For folks who’ve been around awhile, this is a long time coming. The facility is named after John E. King, a devoted longtime resident and member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, honoring the late Deacon for decades of deep community devotion.
Inside, the center is set up right for folks to visit, catch up, and stay active. You’ll find comfortable sitting areas, spaces for activities, televisions and a warming kitchen ready to serve up hot meals to seniors through the city’s SAIL (Stay Active and Independent for Life) program.
“It’s so important that our seniors have a place where they can stay active, nurture friendships, and pass the time in a comfortable and clean environment,” Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis said , “I’m proud that the Mobile Parks and Recreation Department, the City of Mobile, and Councilwoman Gregory could team up to make this a reality in the Hillsdale community.”
Residents are encouraged to come out and attend Thursday morning’s ribbon-cutting ceremony. Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis, Council Vice President Gina Gregory, Public Works Executive Director Shonda Smith, Mike King, members of the King family, and Hillsdale Homeowners Association representatives will attend to officially hand the keys over to the community.
