Mobile’s Historic Snow Day

When it comes to snow, one usually views it in the northern parts of the United States. This year, the southern states such as Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, and Louisiana were able to experience snowy weather like never before. The on-average snowfall of 7.5 inches on January 21, 2025, broke the 144-year record set on January 24, 1881, with 5 inches of snow.

There was so much joy and excitement for Mobilians as they were able to enjoy a day of rare snowy weather, fun, and relaxation. In particularly, residents of Mobile, Alabama, were able to enjoy a late Christmas present with “North Pole” type snow that covered everyone’s cars, houses, and of course the roads. Being a native Mobilian and fellow resident, the snow brought out my inner child as I built snowmen, made snow angels, and engaged in snowball fights.

For such a drastic, and unexpected weather change, experiencing so much excitement and energy from our fellow Mobilians was a wonderful sight-to-see .

By 6:10 p.m. 7.5 inches of snow had fallen in West Mobile.

The snow day caused schools and businesses to close for the safety and precaution of everyone in the surrounding area. Besides having fun at home with family and friends, there were some unexpected moments that happened in the midst of being somewhat quarantined. All of the social media platforms were filled with hilarious videos with the hashtag “Mobile Snow Day 2025”. The news stations reported on how many Mobilians delighted in fun, laughter, and cheer outside of their homes. Students attending the University of South Alabama, Bishop State Community College, Spring Hill College, and the University of Mobile found clever ways to bond and have unlimited fun in the snow.

Although already set for demolition, the heavy snow caused the roof of one of the most iconic buildings in Mobile, the Mobile Civic Center, to collapse. Built between 1962, and finished July 1964, it hosted the likes of Tina Turner, Bon Jovi, Elton John, The Jackson 5, Elvis Presley, Led Zeppelin, Guns and Roses and Bob Dylan.

This rare Mobile Snow Day, or rather, day[s], brought so much love and cheer that it gave everyone a smile on their face.

In a world where there are constant reminders of reasons to “just stay indoors,” this wintry rarity gave people along the Gulf Coast a profound reason to “go outside.”.
