142 years ago the Excelsior Band was born. Passed-down-through-the-ages, the Excelsior Band has been the rhythm of Mardi Gras for Mobilians. Established in 1883, the veteran Black brass tradition has endured the tempest of the post-Reconstruction period known as Jim Crow, and has etched a position in the record books as the oldest surviving marching jazz band in America.
From Humble Beginnings
Recognized in 1883 by Excelsior Band president and Creole Fire Company head John A. Pope, the Excelsior Band started life as a small firehouse brass unit with a mission to enrich Mobile’s community through music. This marked the beginning of Excelsior Band and their illustrious history.
Its earliest members, dedicated sound artisans, developed a characteristic brass tone. During the 1884 Mardi Gras parade, the Excelsior Band won the public’s hearts, but economic hardships and the quest for talented musicians frustrated them. Nevertheless, the Excelsior band became an enduring part of the culture of Mardi Gras with persistence, contributing to the rich history of Excelsior Band and their 142 year history.
